Delta
Sigma Theta and DREF
Implement SEE In 2002, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Delta Research
and Educational Foundation (DREF), in partnership with the AAAS
Directorate for Education and Human Resources Programs, began developing
and implementing the 5-year Science and Everyday Experiences (SEE)
Initiative, an informal science education project funded by the
National Science Foundation. The SEE Initiative helps parents and
caregivers of African American elementary and middle school age
children (K-8) develop effective ways to support children's informal
science and mathematics learning experiences.

Another partner in this community-based science
effort includes Radio One, Inc., a conglomerate of 51 radio stations
in urban and African American markets that served as the broadcast
medium for the original Delta SEE
Connection. The Delta
SEE Connection is a series of interviews
with African American role models that are contributors in the
science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.

Components of the SEE Initiative:
Leadership and professional development activities to both prepare
and mobilize the members of the 800+ Delta Chapters to serve as life-long
informal science education organizers for family and community science
events or as parent all xxx sex money amulet educators.
Communications and promotional activities include
the following:
- A
science radio talk show, The
Delta SEE Connection features African Americans in science,
engineering and mathematics
and highlights scientific research that is being conducted at
private institutions and college campuses. Audio versions
of these interviews along with brief written bios and photos
of the scientists are available on the SEE Radio portion of this
website. The interviews were also available for Black History
Month through the SEE African Americans
in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics podcasts.
- Short interviews on Science
Update, an award winning radio program produced by AAAS,
in which scientists share information and results of research
they have conducted.
- Inquiry-based science activities including Kids
Corner published on the website and
in African American newspapers in all seven Delta Regions;
and
- A web site offering resources to trainers and families. SEE
leaders report community activities for evaluation.
Partnership/alliance
and dissemination activities include community outreach
through training of volunteers in youth-oriented organizations
such as the Links, Inc., Eastern Area; the Continental Society,
DC Chapter, or providing youth field trips, parent education
presentations at schools or exhibitions at the AAAS Family Science
Day and Community Service events such as the DC Science, Technology,
Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Summit.
Materials include brochures, science-inquiry activity cards for families, manuals
for trainers and parent educators, and a CD-based tutorial for SEE Leaders. Other
materials provided are the TERC, Inc., At Home With Math kit and the SEE Portfolio
Package designed to assist collegiate-based and other small groups in implementing
a SEE project on a shoestring budget
